Era richiesta ogni minuto. Il gruppo di ragazzi era arrivato in anticipo davanti all’ingresso della scuola, stringendo in mano i loro libri di Harry Potter. Nella folla c’erano degli agenti di polizia. Erano stati portati per sicurezza, a causa delle voci su una protesta dei genitori per la mancanza di biglietti, in quest’affluente quartiere di Boston.
Dentro la sala si era riempita di gente da un momento all’altro. Uno dei dodici amministratori della casa editrice si fece avanti per annunciare le regole per la firma dei libri di JK Rowling, autrice del best seller Harry Potter. Solo due libri per l’autografo, niente autografi personalizzati, niente domande.
“Non ci sarà il tempo per parlare con lei, per dirle tutto quello che vuoi” disse gentilmente una donna sul palco ad un gruppetto di giovani fan lamentose.
Ma poi, lei era lì che camminava tra i flash mentre la gente in sala aveva cominciato ad applaudire. L’autrice di quella che è probabilmente la più sensazionale serie di libri per bambini nella storia dell’editoria salì sul palco masticando la chewing gum, elegantemente vestita con una giacca grigio scuro e stivali neri con il tacco alti fino al ginocchio.

Appena salì sul podio la creatrice di Harry Potter disse con una punta di rammarico “ mi dispiace ma non abbiamo molto tempo oggi. Che ne dite se voi mi fate delle domande e io rispondo? Va bene?” L’autrice di Harry Potter ha risposto alle seguenti domande:
Q: quante parole ci sono nel primo libro di Harry Potter?
JKR: 80, 6000, 900 e qualcosa. Vedi lo so! Non era una domanda cattiva; era una domanda perfetta!
Q: Quanti libri di Harry Potter ci saranno?
JKR: ce ne saranno 7 in totale. Oh sembri felice di sentirlo. Sono così felice! Harry sarà maggiorenne (17 anni) nell’ultimo libro.
Q: Come si chiamerà il quarto libro?
JKR: sono stata su internet e ho letto che si chiamerà Harry Potter e la coppa del mondo di Quidditch, ma è una bugia. Ma non voglio rinunciarvi.
Q: perché hai venduto i diritti cinematografici?
JKR: La ragione per cui li ho venduti alla Warner è perché mi hanno dato un sacco di buoni motivi, e di come ne stanno parlando ora, sarà un buon film. Ovviamente sono un po’ nervosa perché faranno fare ai miei personaggi cose che non voglio che facciano.
Q: chi è il tuo personaggio preferito oltre a Harry Potter?
JKR: è molto difficile scegliere. È divertente scrivere di Piton perché è una persona veramente orribile. Hagrid è qualcuno che mi piacerebbe conoscere.
Q: Come hai deciso i nomi?
JKR: Alcuni li ho inventati. Dumbledore è una vecchia parola inglese che significa calabrone. Pensavo di aver inventato il nome Hogwarts ma recentemente un amico mi ha detto” ti ricordi abbiamo visto dei gigli nei giardini di Kew (dei giardini a Londra)” A quanto pare ci sono dei gigli chiamati Hogwarts. Me ne ero dimenticata!
Q: Ci sarà uno show televisivo su Harry Potter?
JKR: No, sono solo voci. Al momento ci saranno solo i film. Ho ricevuto alcune offerte molto strane. Una fabbrica di margarina voleva mettere Harry sulla sua margarina, se riesci a crederci.

"Penso che sia eccitante quanto incontrare Pedro Martinez, e io sono un appassionato di baseball!" ha detto Zach,11 anni, subito dopo il suo incontro ravvicinato con JK Rowling. Olivia, 10 anni, era altrettanto entusiasta.
“ Mi ha mandato un bacio!” ha detto raggiante
“Questo vince i Pokemon!” ha detto la madre di uno dei due.
Ma in diversi stati del Sud, i racconti di magia che hanno affascinato i bambini hanno allarmato alcuni genitori. Nel South Carolina, al Consiglio di Stato della Pubblica Istruzione è stato chiesto di verificare se ci fossero libri di Potter nelle classi.
“ nei libri vi è la presenza della morte, dell’odio e della mancanza di rispetto.” Ha detto un genitore al consiglio.
A Marietta, in Georgia, i libri di Harry Potter sono stati rimossi in una quinta di una scuola elementare, perché considerati inadeguati.
Ma altrove i genitori sembrano soddisfatti di trovare i propri figli con un libro in mano, nell’era della Nintendo.
“ questo è il fenomeno dei bambini!” ha dichiarato Gladys, madre di due accaniti fan di Harry Potter.” Questo dimostra che i bambini quando possono scegliere da soli scelgono un pezzo di letteratura che racchiude in sé grandi valori! "

Whose Harry Potter series made her the first billionaire author, said on Tuesday she was surprised at the fuss surrounding her announcement the boy wizard's head teacher, Albus Dumbledore, was gay.

"It has certainly never been news to me that a brave and brilliant man could love other men," Rowling told a news conference in Toronto, where she is attending an authors' festival.

Rowling, a mother-of-three, made the surprise revelation in New York on Friday, during her first U.S. tour in seven years.

She said Dumbledore was once infatuated with the winsome wizard Gellert Grindelwald, but the two became rivals when Grindelwald turned out to be more interested in the dark than the good arts. Dumbledore went on to destroy Grindelwald.

Reaction has been mainly supportive on fans' Web sites, such as The Leaky Cauldron (www.leakynews.com), where news of Dumbledore's outing has drawn more than 3,000 comments.

Rowling declined to say whether her "outing" of Dumbledore might alienate those who disapprove of homosexuality.
"He is my character. He is what he is and I have the right to say what I say about him," she said.

Rowling said she made no revelations about Dumbledore's sexuality before Friday, because she had never before been asked directly.

"People wanted so much information in advance of the story, that just to keep my sanity and keep my eye on my own plot, I did not give masses away ahead of time," she said.

The seventh and final book in the boy wizard series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" became the fastest selling book in history upon its release in July, selling more than 11 million copies in the first 24 hours in Britain and the United States.

The fifth film of the series, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", received three nominations on Monday for Britain's film awards, the Baftas.

Rowling said she "probably won't" write a prequel to the series, but did not rule it out.

"Is that (a prequel) not a little bit 'Star Wars Episode I'?" she quipped. "I'm not going to say 'never' because 'never' in my life acts as a red rag to bull and I've immediately wanted to do whatever it is I said never to."

Rowling said she might work on a Potter encyclopedia for charity, but only after a long break.
"It's like the break-up of a marriage. It's a good idea not to see each other for a while, then maybe you can be good friends afterwards," she said.

James Naughtie talks to JK Rowling about one of her novels, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
James Naughtie: Hello and Welcome to Book Club. Among children of a certain age, JK Rowling is already a name that sits on the shelf with Roald Dahl and with names from an earlier age like Richmal Crompton or even CS Lewis. She, Joanne Rowling, wrote in 1997, a book called Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone. And before long everyone knew that it was a phenomenon. Children and parents gobbled it up.
So today, it's a children's book club. The assembled group of readers here is young. They're all Harry Potter enthusiasts and I know from the cacophony of the last few minutes outside that they can't wait to get stuck into JK Rowling who, I must say, seems surprisingly calm sitting among them all. Welcome to all of you and welcome to all of you at home, young or old, as Harry Potter takes centre stage.
Nothing like this has happened in children's literature for quite a long time. It's a story of magic but also a story of real people. Harry's adventures as a pupil at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are weird and unforgettable.
There are ghosts and wizards; the three headed dog that guards the trap door on the third floor under which nestles the philosopher's stone itself; a fantastical cast of characters in robes and beards. They all populate a world that is as detailed and as real it seems as the ordinary world outside, inhabited by the muggles, which is what Harry and his like call the mortals who have no magic in them and simply don't understand what can happen to you when you take the train from platform nine and three quarters at King's Cross to go into another world. There's Draco Malfoy, the flame-haired Ron Weasley, the swot Hermione Granger, Nick the nearly headless ghost. The four houses in the school compete against each other: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. They play Quidditch, which is football in the air played with broomsticks, and they have problems with a twelve-foot mountain troll and the evil Professor Snape. I think you get the picture...
From the very moment that the owls start to behave very oddly in Chapter one and a cat is seen reading a road map (it's really Professor McGonagall in another guise) you're off on a roller coaster. Harry is pitched against Voldemort, the essence of evil, and it's the start of what you know will be a long adventure.
We've now had two sequels, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and in the last few weeks, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Four more are promised, but it's to the main text that we go back today. I'm surrounded by wide-eyed readers, in the midst of whom sits JK Rowling.
(To Joanne Rowling) What is it that has produced the excitement about Harry Potter? Because, on the one hand there is the magic, there's the fantasy. On the other hand, there is something that is very real: real people and an ordinary world. Where do these two meet in a way that has produced this fascination?
JK Rowling: I always find it very hard to talk about the books in these terms because I find it very, very difficult to be objective about them. To me, they remain my private little world - I was writing about Harry for five years before anyone else read a word of him and it is still an amazing feeling to me, to be in a room, as we are today, with people whose heads are also populated with these characters, because, as I say, for five years, they were my private secret. From the moment I had the idea for the book, I could just see a lot of comic potential in the idea that wizards walk among us and that we are foolishly blind to the fact that the reason that we keep losing our car keys is that wizards are bewitching them for fun.
James Naughtie: He's a good guy, Harry, isn't he?
JK Rowling: Yeah, he's a very good guy, yeah, definitely.
James Naughtie: He makes the world right and good in the end, doesn't he? Did you write it with a sort of moral purpose, to use a pompous phrase?
JK Rowling: No, I've never at any point sat down and thought, what will be this book's moral? Having said that, a moral normally emerges fairly rapidly as I write, so it's not a conscious thing, it tends to evolve as I do the books.
James Naughtie: And yet, the thing is, although it is full of fun, there is quite a bit of sadness. He is an orphan, or that's how it appears at the beginning of the book. And there's that awful moment where he looks in the mirror and sees his parents. Now that's quite a troubling image. Did you worry about how children would take to that
?
JK Rowling: No, which sounds very callous. But I never, at any point writing any of the books, worried whether children would understand or whether they would find it funny or whether I would frighten them too much, ever, because I wrote the books entirely for myself. I just went where I wanted to go and hang the consequences really.
