1946 Born February 21st, 1946 in London's Hammersmith district (Welsh mother and Irish father). He is the second of four children. He has an older brother, a younger brother and a younger sister. As a child he was bright and artistic, capable of exellent calligraphy and watercolour painting.
1951 In age of 5 years, Alan made his theatrical debut on December 12th, in the Nativity play at his infants school in Acton
1954 Father, who was a painter and decorator, died in cancer, leaving behind Alan, his mother and 3 siblings. Alan was only 8 years old.
1957 In age of 11, Alan Rickman won a scholarship to West London's Latymer Upper (a private school in Hammersmith). There he gained the lifelong friendship and patronage of his English teacher, Colin Turner, who encouraged him - and other Latymer alumni such as Hugh Grant, Mel Smith and Christopher Guard - to pursue a theatrical career. Turner was a key influence on the formation of Rickman's artistic sensibility. Some school friends say that Turner's voice and mannerisms are echoed in Rickman's acting style. 1967 At the age of 21, Alan graduated from Chelsea College of Art
1968 After graduation, Alan worked in various graphic design jobs, and founded eventually own company (Graphiti) with his friends. They designed LP sleeves, book jackets and a subversive left-wing free-sheet with the misleadingly conventional title of the Notting Hill Herald. They had a studio in Berwick Street, in the heart of Soho.
1972 At the age of 26, Alan got a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, supported himself by working as a dresser for Sir Ralph Richardson. While staying in RADA he won the Emile Litter Prize, the Forbes Robertson Prize, and the Bancroft Gold Medal.
