Alan Rickman's Biography
Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman was born in Hammersmith, London on Feb 21st ,1946. He is the second son child of four with an Irish father who sadly passed away of lung cancer when Alan was only 8 and a Welsh mother who instilled in him a respect for women. As a child he developed an early a liking for art and was soon talented in both calligraphy and watercolor paintings. He also found another interest, acting and when he was only 7, he stared in his very first play. Although it was his talent as an artist that he got his start it will be his talent in acting that he will be remembered for.
Eventually, Alan won a scholarship to West London’s Latymer Upper School, and here with the encouragement of his teachers he developed his acting skills, becoming involved in the drama department. He went on to study art and his artistic talents lead him to graphic designing. He enrolled at the Chelsea College of Arts and Design. It was here at Chelsea that he met Rima Horton, his partner still today, and they founded an amateur troupe called The Brook Green Players.
On his graduation from Chelsea he formed a design company called Graffiti with some friends. He continued to work with graphic design for many years but also continued to develop his acting skill working with the Brook Green Players but also another amateur troupe called Court Drama Group and it was there that he performed in plays such as Romeo and Juliet along with other works like A Bridge to Far.
At the age of 26 , rather late in years for such a move, he wrote to RADA hoping for an interview and received one, delivering a speech from Richard III won him a well earned spot and spent the next three years studying and performing Shakespeare and for his efforts he was awarded with the Emille Litter Prize, the Forbes Robertson Prize and the Bancroft Gold Medal.
Once he left the RADA , he committed himself to any acting roles that would come his way, taking on many both serious roles and roles that would show a humorous side to his acting ability, with a little talent in the singing department to complete the resume. He performed in everything from There's a Girl in my Soup to Hamlet to Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He was considered a very intense, magnetic yet sexy actor with good advice to share and who's opinions were accepted with gratitude.
In 1978, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company but because of his late age and his raw experience he found their elitist and traditional structures to confining and only stuck it out for a year before returning to rep. To many people this may have been a setback but Alan persisted with his acting and was rewarded with his TV debut in 1979 , staring as Vidal in Therese Raquin and also continued to work on stage.
It was in 1982 that Alan Rickman began the true journey that would take him to stardom. He stared opposite Alec Guinness in the spy series Smily’s People and was renowned for his portrayal of Rev. Obadiah Slope in the Barchester Chronicles. He was later cast as Vicomte de Valmont in Les Liasons Dangerousness that ran in both London then on to Broadway from 1985-1987.
During one performance of Les Liaisons Dangerousness that a producer named Joel Silver had noted a young energetic actor named Alan Rickman and knew right away that they had found their man for a movie to star Bruce Willis and it helped that Alan was available for cheap. But it was his mesmerizing delivery of a terrorist ( who said we were terrorist? ) named Hans Gruber that Alan had finally hit the so called big time. It was also his villainous, merciless and at time humorous portrayal of a bad guy that gave him the bad guy title and soon he was flooded with offers.
