If the moderator had allowed the artists to talk, if his 'questions' hadn't often been long-winded, muddled, pointless and/or obvious statements, the Artist Talk would have been wonderful. Fiona Shaw seemed exasperated with him, AR masked his feelings and LD defended him once or twice. That moderator doesn't seem to understand that you ask actors different questions from what you ask authors or professors, and you talk about different things. The moderator spent time quoting or talking about Henry James, James Joyce, Freud, Nietzsche, some Norwegian critic of Ibsen, etc instead of letting the artists have more time to talk about the play, their characters and whatever else they would have shared, had they been given the chance. At different times he interrupted all three actors.
During the Q&A someone asked whether this play had caused the actors to learn about themselves. AR said that Borkman was isolated so he too must be isolated, eg shut in his dressing room unable to hear what FS and LD are saying on stage in act one. He said he enjoys the company of actors so he dislikes the isolation involved with this role and it isn't something he'd want to repeat [in a future play?] He also said that the play is difficult and it's like climbing a mountain (with your fingers, I think he said).
